Landscapes carry memories. They are shaped by geological time, by the stories, practices, and imaginations of the people who live with them. „Lagazoui“ is a photographic diptych taken while hiking through the Dolomites. When you move as a small figure on foot, the mountains reveal themselves slowly, their towering faces shifting and reshaping with each step, much like the modest photographs often found in alpine huts that depict surrounding peaks and climbing routes. The work draws on this quiet tradition of situating the viewer within a specific place. Above the image hangs a small crucifix woven from palm by artisans in Mexico, traditionally sold outside churches on Palm Sunday. Its fragile handcraft recalls the summit crosses that mark many Alpine peaks. Mounted on plywood sealed with resin, a popular, durable, and inexpensive framing method in Mexico, the work brings together acts of exploration, devotion, and craft, gestures that honor the spirituality present in the landscapes we move through: in mountains and rivers, waterfalls and stones, trees and wind.
„Shadow Hands“ is a still from „The Dust of Modern Life“. In this key scene, Liem’s hands trace shadows over the sawdust left by illegal loggers in the jungle. Using the beam of his headlamp, he paints across this debris, finding poetry in what is the aftermath of destruction.
